DODGE RIDGE IS A FAMILY AFFAIR
Local Sonora family works and plays together at Dodge Ridge
April 16, 2009 PINECREST, Calif. – As one of the largest employers in Tuolumne County, Dodge Ridge has been built on putting family and community first. For a few lucky employees it’s literally a family affair as all the members of the same family are on the Dodge Ridge payroll.
Linda Blake of Sonora, CA began working at Dodge Ridge three years ago and now it’s a family theme; all three of Linda’s children now are part of the Dodge Ridge team. Jordanna, age 18, in her third season at Dodge is a level 2 snowboard instructor. Warren, age 16, and Hannah, age 15, have both been at Dodge for the last two winters and work in the Childrens Center. Warren is a Children Specialist and is taking his snowboarding instructor level 1 exam this spring. Hannah is a lead Children Center Assistant and hopes to become an instructor in the future.
“We moved to the area in 2004 and immediately were drawn to Dodge Ridge. That first winter we all starting riding, took lessons and bought season passes, we caught the Dodge Ridge bug. The next winter when I was looking for work Dodge seemed like a great place to work,” said Blake. Blake is now the Retail Supervisor in the Sports Shop and enjoys having all of her kids at Dodge. “It’s great because we can all be together, grab lunch on some days and even sneak out to take a few runs together.”
“It’s nice having your whole family working at a ski resort because you never have to look for a ride to work. Plus if you are looking for someone to snowboard with, you always have your family,” said Warren.
“Even our Christmas card this year was of all of us in our Dodge Ridge uniforms, we just love it” said Hannah.
Blake also highlights the car ride home as an exceptional time for her and her three teenagers. “We can talk about our day and connect in a way that is very unique. I think it’s pretty special that my teenagers want to hang out with me.”
Blake and her kids are already looking forward to next year and working together at Dodge Ridge. “Linda and her kids have been a great addition to Dodge Ridge. It’s not uncommon to have families working for us and maybe it’s rare at other ski resorts, but it is part of what makes Dodge Ridge special,” said Sally Helm, President and CEO.
“It’s great to see the kids encouraging each other, patting each other on the back and giving each other tips on how to improve. Dodge Ridge has given my kids a common experience that has made them closer,” says Blake. “The best part of working at Dodge Ridge is being connected as a family.”
SKI PATROL HONORED AT DODGE RIDGE
The National Ski Patrol honors 4 extraordinary Dodge Ridge Ski Patrol members
April 10, 2009 PINECREST, Calif. – LeRoy Giovannoni, Jere Woodhead and Mary Ross have combined for 132 years of volunteer service at Dodge Ridge and were honored this past weekend at Dodge Ridge with Distinguished Service Awards from the National Ski Patrol. The awards are the highest honor given by the National Ski Patrol and it is very rare for a ski resort to have one awarded, let alone three. In addition to the three outstanding volunteers Doug Parker, the Ski Patrol and Risk Management Director and an employee of Dodge Ridge for the last 30 years, was honored with a National Appointment from the National Ski Patrol. In order to gain their awards all four members were nominated by other members of the National Ski Patrol.
The rookie of the bunch LeRoy Giovannoni 80, of Oakdale, CA has been a member of the Dodge Ridge ski patrol since 1969. LeRoy began skiing at Dodge Ridge at 32 and has been hooked on the camaraderie the Dodge Ridge patrol ever since. “I love the self satisfaction of helping someone that is injured,” Giovannoni said. Even with 40 years under his belt he still gets called Rookie by fellow patrollers Woodhead and Ross.
Ross 78, of Modesto, CA began skiing in the mid 1950’s with the Modesto ski club and began patrolling as one of the first women patrollers at Dodge in 1966. Every season since then during the weekends you can find her motor home parked in the Dodge Ridge parking lot. Professionally Ross taught school for 40 years and has been teaching CPR since 1974 and has taught, “Too many people CPR to count,” over her tenure. After having both knee replaced she now mostly sticks to the First aid room but loves helping people. “Dodge Ridge ski patrol is the best trained group and the most fun to work with. I feel lucky to have been involved with Dodge Ridge all these years,” said Ross.
Woodhead 80, of Hughson, CA will celebrate his 50th season at Dodge Ridge next winter and has been promised a big party. Despite having two artificial knees Woodhead still skis 30 days a year and it’s truly a family affair as his son, daughter and daughter in-law have all joined him on as part of the patrol. “My favorite part of Dodge Ridge is that it’s one big family, everyone takes care of everyone. If you get hurt here and can’t drive home you don’t have to worry, we’ll take care of you, make sure you get home,” said Woodhead.
Parker feels lucky to have worked with all three and hopes to have the longevity they have enjoyed. Parker is well on his way, skiing at age 12 with the cub scouts and on the Dodge Ridge ski patrol since 1985 he hopes to be skiing into his 80’s. “They set the example for everyone, their zest for life and dedication to giving the best care is amazing. They are a joy to be around and a phenomenal example for my young staff, not to mention they always have fun,” said Parker.

Keely Cashman sweeps up at Mammoth.
April 7, 2009 / FAR WEST - USSA- J4's, J5's Enjoy Great Racing At Mammoth Championships....
J5 Girls. With so many athletes from Tahoe it’s not hard to understand how tough it is for a Southern or Central California athlete to find a spot on a crowded Tahoe or Mammoth podium. That is, until Bear Valley’s Keely Cashman showed up to the party. She packed a broom in her ski bag and did a little sweeping, as in all three events, 1-1-1. But behind her the podium shifted to and fro. In one GS, it was Sugar Bowl’s Pilar Alvarez second and Squaw’s Emma Knaus; in the other, it was Diamond Peak’s Amanda Pretti second and Alvarez with her second podium, third. In the SL, it was another Central California athlete, Sierra Summit’s Ashton Peckinpah second with Squaw’s Maia Dvoracek third. For the full story please click here.

DODGE RIDGE 1ST FAMILY WINTER CARNIVAL HUGE SUCCESS
A Full Day of Unique Activities attracts over 60 participants
March 1, 2009 PINECREST, Calif. – Dodge Ridge’s 1st Family Winter Carnival presented by Subaru and Elan/Dalbello was a resounding success as 60 participants and numerous happy families enjoyed a full day activities.
Steve Sweitzer from Sonora, brought his sons, Adam age 8 and Chad age 11, to Dodge Ridge specifically to participate in the Family Winter Carnival. “It was really fun to have different challenges for the kids. This was a very unique event, we had a great time, and we look forward to the 2nd Annual,” said Sweitzer. The Sweitzer grandparents took pictures of Adam and Chad with gold medals hug around their necks, as they both won for their age group in the Big Air event.
It was a family affair for Laynette Roos from Merced, who brought her daughter Kaley, nephew Eli, and his cousin Soren to the Family Winter Carnival. Kaley was 1st in the obstacle course and 2nd in the Big Air contest.
“The whole day was awesome, I loved it all,” said Kaley when asked about about her favorite part of the event. Laynette commented, “We always have a great time at Dodge and will absolutely come back next year for the Family Winter Carnival.”
The Family Winter Carnival was a vision of Snowsports and Event Director Corby Fisher. Fisher grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where the annual Winter Carnival was one of the highlights of the winter. “I grew up with a huge community ski culture and wanted to bring the carnival to the families of Dodge Ridge,” said Fisher.
The Family Winter Carnival featured events for parents and children of all ages, ski or snowboard, expert or beginner:
• The Subaru Parent/Child Giant Slalom Race had over 25 teams of one parent and one child, each took one run, ski or snowboard, on the giant slalom race course, the results were based on the two runs added together. The Perry family from Modesto dominated the 5-6 age group. The parents, Corey and Britt teamed up with their 6 year old triplets, Stash, Britt and Ethan to sweep the podium.
• The one-legged ski race for ages 5 and under, the child races with one ski on and one ski off, was a big hit for the youngest participants. Tallulah Richard, age 2 ½ won a gold medal for the fastest time for the 3 and under division.
• The Kids Air Show had over 40 participants with the judges giving scores from under the Red Bull umbrella and was the most popular event of the day. The best trick of the day was a 540 (1 ½ rotations) by Evan Nicholini, who won a brand new pair of Elan skis.
• The final event of the day was the kids obstacle course with again over 40 participants. Kids negotiated a race course with large rollers, bank turns and hoops they had to ski or snowboard under.
• The day concluded with awards for all the events, participation ribbons for all the athletes, face painting for kids in the Family Lodge and wine tasting and a jazz band in the North Fork Bistro.
“It was wonderful to see so many families out enjoying Dodge Ridge and participating in our 1st Winter Carnival. It was so cool to see the huge line of kids waiting to jump the Big Air, parents cheering, and grandparents taking pictures. I wish we could do this every weekend,” said Fisher. The 2nd annual Family Winter Carnival will surely be on the schedule again next year.

Children’s Interpretive Program Launched at Dodge Ridge
Snowsports Director Corby Fisher and local artist Eileen Hampton team up to create a unique environment for kids in the Family Lodge.
February 19, 2009 PINECREST, California - This winter kids at Dodge Ridge will have a unique opportunity to have fun while learning more about the winter environment as Dodge Ridge has launched a new Children’s Interpretive Program.
Exploring the mountain environment and discovering local nature will guide children from top to bottom. The program is designed to create a lifelong love of not only skiing or riding but also the neighboring forest, featuring specialized instructors trained in natural history and mountain animal life. Five new mascots have been introduced this season to help educate and inspire kids in the Dodge Ridge Children’s Program, each representing an important quality to highlight to the children and families:
• “Snowy” the female flying squirrel represents fun flying in the air and landing in control.
• “Buddy” the blue jay represents the Freeride Terrain Parks.
• “Emmy” the bald eagle represents safety message and smartstyle riding.
• “River” the female raccoon represents family and learning on the mountain.
• “Cinnamon” the coyote represents mountain exploration.
A new look accompanies the educational curriculum. Local artist Eileen Hampton created a one-of-a-kind mural spanning several walls in the Family Lodge, opened in 2007. The mural depicts the fun of skiing and snowboarding through skiers, riders and whimsical mascots, and includes a huge kid friendly trail map that kids can touch and trace where they were on the mountain.
“The mural is vibrant and draws kids into creating a lifetime love of skiing and riding,” said Hampton.
“The mural was a vision I had from the second I saw the amazing Family Lodge”, said Corby Fisher, Director of the Dodge Ridge Snowsports School, former United States Ski Team athlete and Olympic Coach. “I wanted to create a kid friendly environment where everyone can have fun and be excited about the mountain environment at Dodge Ridge. Eileen truly made that vision come to life; I love the mural.”
The Children’s Interpretive program will continue to develop, including skiing mascots, children only trails, gullies and alleys and a “kids only” trail map. In addition to the Interpretive program Dodge Ridge offers a Snowplay program for children ages 3-5. The Snowplay program will cultivate kids love of the snow through play in a no-pressure, fun atmosphere. For children ages 4-12 the Snowsports School offers a great lesson package including lesson, equipment, lunch, an all mountain lift ticket and unlimited fun.

Fishers have found home at Dodge Ridge after chasing Olympic dreams
By Ron Agostini
Modesto Bee
February 10, 2009
No more Olympic coaching for Corby and Emily Fisher. No more globetrotting. No more hobnobbing with the winter world's elite. Instead, they find their fun raising a family at Dodge Ridge. There's Keely, 20 months old, already on skis, imploring, "Faster, Dad!" There's Zane, 5 months old, who's already figured out that snow is cold but beautiful. "Life has changed a bit, but it's better," Corby says. "This is the coolest thing I've ever done."
The Fishers, both 33, have discovered their ideal nest at Dodge Ridge. He's the resort's snow sports director. She's the marketing director. "Corby said they saw in Dodge Ridge a resort with heart," Dodge owner Sally Helm said. "They truly get it."
Corby and Emily arrived two years ago, a couple eager to start a family and also pass along their rich experience. They've shared their expertise in everything from development of terrain parks, to ski instruction, to starting Dodge's first Winter Carnival later this month. But, true to the Dodge Ridge reputation, family comes first. "We wanted to take a step back and focus on family and enjoy this part of our lives," Emily said. "Dodge brings me back to my roots."
Emily spent her childhood in Hanover, N.H., and competed in cross country skiing as the team captain at Middlebury College (Vt.). Meanwhile, Corby was immersed into the rodeo-summer-skiing-winter genre as a kid at Steamboat Springs, Colo. For him, it was perfectly natural to ride bulls, jump out of planes and race down the mountain as fast as possible. "Fear is kind of an illusion," he says.
The couple met in Park City, Utah, in 2000, while Corby served as the coach and director of the National Sports Foundation. He sought a woman who could identify talent for a new discipline -- women's ski jumping. Emily, a flyer herself as a teenager who later migrated to Park City to work for the U.S. Ski Team, took the interview. They were married three years later. "He always says, 'I put an ad in the paper for a coach and found a wife,'" she said.
They glided together through two Olympic cycles leading to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 and Torino, Italy, in 2006. Emily, employed as the program manager for the national team for 10 years, took pride in the development of Korean-American Toby Dawson. In 2006, Dawson earned a bronze medal in moguls at Torino.
Corby, a former student at Wyoming and Utah, made his coaching mark via breakthrough international results in ski jumping. His NSF grew into the largest club in North America and was the host club for the Olympic ski jumping in 2002.
He then became the head ski jumping coach for the U.S. Nordic Combined Team and, in 2003, guided Johnny Spillane to the first-ever gold medal by an American at the Nordic World Ski Championships. In 2006, Fisher again made history as the youngest head coach at Torino. "The older we get, the more special those times get for us at Torino," Corby says.
Emily's determination to pioneer women's ski jumping has not waned. The event will make its debut in the upcoming World Championships in the Czech Republic, though its coming-out party in the Olympics probably won't happen until 2014.
Still, the couple has deferred virtually all world-wide pursuits in favor of their children. Corby reluctantly has walked away from bull riding and skydiving. "That was part of the deal," Emily said. Retorts Corby, "My last skydive was 20 months ago. I'm trying to grow out of it."
Regardless, the essential question remains for the Fishers: Why Dodge Ridge?
"After skiing around the world, from Steamboat to Sestriere, I was looking for a great spot to share my love of snow sports," Corby said. "Skiing has been great for us, and all we want is to share our passion with everyone in Northern California. But it baffles me that one hour from Dodge, people are golfing."
The Fishers live in Strawberry, about as far away from Steamboat and Hanover as one might imagine. But for them and their children, it is the best of all worlds for one reason.
It's home.

DODGE RIDGE EXPERIENCE MOVES CLOSER TO TAHOE RESORTS
Multi-million dollar base area expansion provides big resort feel
January 26, 2009 PINECREST, Calif. – While proximity and value have always been the cornerstone of Dodge Ridge’s attraction to central and northern Californians, recent large scale base area improvements are pointing towards an experience to rival many of Tahoe’s mid-sized resorts.
“Our goal is to have customers who typically head to Tahoe for all of their skiing or riding to Dodge Ridge and enjoy spending a few of those days closer to home, taking advantage of our tremendous value,” said Sally Helm, who along with her husband Frank has owned the resort for 33 years. “We’ve always been about family, and always will be, but we want to move past the reputation of just being a close resort with lower prices and compete for the Tahoe skier or ride who we know will enjoy the experience at Dodge.”
The $6 million base area expansion is highlighted by the 16,000 square foot Family Lodge, featuring a new Children’s Snowsports Center, full service modernized Ticketing and Guest Services Center, day-use locker rooms, and a cozy bistro. Corby Fisher, a former U.S. Ski Team athlete and coach, is bringing fresh ideas and the latest techniques to all of Dodge’s skier and rider development programs, including the opening of the Children’s Interpretive Program.
Other significant improvements include:
1) A newly remodeled rental center, dramatically increasing the speed and ease of renting both skis and snowboard. Along with the facility upgrade Dodge Ridge also invested in brand new top-of-the-line rental equipment is from Elan, Dalbello, and Rossignol.
2) Parking has been improved by repaving and expanding the preferred parking lot with new spaces for 200 vehicles. There is also ample room for picking up and dropping off guests.
3) Dodge Ridge Progression Parks for new park enthusiasts as well as a park for intermediate and experts. Dodge Ridge has also introduced the Free Ride park program, where beginners learn the fundamentals of park skiing and riding through single day and month long camps.
“We have a vertical rise, top and bottom elevation, skiable acres, trail numbers and lengths that stack up against many of Tahoe’s mid-sized resorts,” said Helm, who spends her days at the resort during the operating season. “We are making commitments to our facilities, infrastructure, professional staff and programs that along with our tremendous value – Dodge has the lowest retail ticket price in the region – will give Tahoe skiers a reason to consider Dodge.”
Go green at Dodge Ridge
Join Dodge Ridge in caring about the environment.
Respecting the Stanislaus national forest that is home to their slopes is a high priority for Dodge Ridge as they continue their commitment to the environment this winter with three major green programs.
1. Ride the bus or ride with a friend!
Skiers and riders can keep money in their pocket and go green at the same time. There are several transportation options and incentives to get to the mountain:
• In it’s 4th year, the SnowCruiser is a ski bus service from valley locations for $69 that includes your round trip ride to the mountain and an all day lift ticket for teens and adults.
• Locals can ride the Tuolumne County Ski Bus for just $10 round trip from Sonora and various pick-up locations along the Highway 108 corridor. “With the SnowCruiser and the Tuolumne County Ski Bus, skiers and riders have great environmentally friendly options for getting to the mountain,” said Sally Helm, President and CEO.
• Even if guests choose to drive their own car they can still participate in Dodge Ridge’s new car pool program. The car pool incentive program invites guests and employees to ride share for prizes such as helmets, lift tickets, season pass and more. Cars with four or more persons per car will receive raffle tickets for the day and each person will be entered to win weekly prizes and a grand prize.
2. Dodge Ridge and SkiGreen team up to support renewable energy.
Dodge Ridge has partnered with Bonneville Environmental Foundation to give guests and employees the option to ski green. A guest or employee can directly reduce their carbon dioxide footprint by purchasing a SkiGreen Tag for $2.00 and receive two stickers that can be placed on your lift ticket, helmet, skis, board, or car. Each tag purchase represents enough wind energy to offset the pollution generated from driving an average around 150 miles. All funds collected go directly towards wind energy output.
3. Recycling with pride.
In addition to these new programs Dodge Ridge continues to step up their operational environmental efforts. Through the PG&E program Climatesmart 100% of Dodge’s electricity usage is offset. Approximately 50% of the garbage produced at Dodge Ridge is recycled. Further environmental choices are printing brochures on recycled paper, using energy saving lights, zero waste Dyson hand dryers in the new Family Lodge, and utilizing environmentally friendly spoons and forks in the restaurants.

Community celebration honoring Bobby Rapp and recognizing local artist Leslie Rolfe kicks off the winter season at Dodge Ridge.
November 30, 2008 -- PINECREST, Calif. – The Family Lodge was filled to capacity with members of the community gathering around the fireplace to kick of the 08-09 winter season. It was a special evening honoring Sonora local US Army Sergeant Bobby Rapp and recognizing local artist Leslie Rolfe. The evening began with the unveiling of Leslie Rolfe’s watercolor of the Family Lodge. Leslie shared recollections and antidotes from her lifetime of skiing at Dodge Ridge. Her rendering of the Family Lodge is the latest in her series of paintings of historical buildings throughout Tuolumne County. Now in her 80’s her paintings have documented nearly 100 years of history in the county. As a lifelong resident of Pinecrest, Leslie’s Family Lodge painting is the final painting to complete her work of the buildings at Dodge Ridge. The Family Lodge will proudly display Leslie’s latest work throughout the winter season.
The program concluded with the dedication of “Bobby’s Freedom Run” in honor and memory of Bobby Rapp. Growing up, Bobby was a long time member of the Dodge Ridge Race Team and loved to ski at Dodge Ridge, both on the race course and in the terrain parks. Jennifer and Ted Rapp shared memories and stories of how much Dodge Ridge meant to Bobby and their family. “Ted and I met at Dodge Ridge and when the boys were young we would trade off, one parent skiing and the other changing diapers in the lodge,” Jennifer Rapp recalled. Bobby’s legacy at Dodge Ridge will continue as Bobby left a generous contribution to the Dodge Ridge Race Team. It was Bobby’s wish that a gift be made to help the growth of the race team through a scholarship fund. “Bobby left money to all of the sports he was involved with but the most significant was to Dodge Ridge,” Ted Rapp shared. The run, a black diamond, will be open as soon as the snow flies. “The dedication of Bobby’s Freedom Run is an honor,” said Sally Helm.
“Leslie Rolfe was skiing Dodge Ridge before Dodge Ridge even existed, and Bobby has ensured that the youth of Tuolumne County will be able to follow in Leslie’s tracks. This evening was a great way to kick off the winter season and to commemorate two very important Dodge Ridge alumni” said Frank Helm.
Community celebration honoring Bobby Rapp and recognizing local artist Leslie Rolfe to kick off the winter season at Dodge Ridge.
November 20, 2008 -- PINECREST, Calif. – Dodge Ridge Wintersports Area will kick off the 08-09 winter season on November 29, 2008 with a community celebration honoring US Army Sergeant Bobby Rapp and paying tribute to local renowned artist Leslie Rolfe. The evening will celebrate the past, present and future of Dodge Ridge. “Leslie Rolfe was skiing Dodge Ridge before Dodge Ridge even existed, and Bobby has ensured that the youth of Tuolumne County will be able to follow in Leslie Rolfe’s tracks. This evening will be a wonderful night to commemorate two very important Dodge Ridge alumni” said Frank and Sally Helm.
Sonora local, Bobby Rapp, was killed by a suicide bomber in March while serving in the US Army in Afghanistan. Frank and Sally Helm will dedicate the ski run Bobby’s Freedom Run in memory of Bobby. Growing up Bobby was a long time member of the Dodge Ridge Race Team and loved to ski at Dodge Ridge, both on the race course and in the terrain parks. Bobby’s legacy at Dodge Ridge will continue as Bobby left a generous contribution to the Dodge Ridge Race Team. “His gift shows what the race team meant to him,” said Jennifer Rapp, Rapp’s mother. “It’s my honor to uphold my son’s last wishes.” It was Bobby’s wish that the gift be intended to help the growth of the race team through a scholarship fund. “Bobby was a member of the Dodge Ridge family and through his thoughtful donation his legacy will help the future members of our race team” said Frank and Sally Helm who had several fond memories of watching Bobby growing up at Dodge Ridge.
Leslie Rolfe’s rendering of the Family Lodge is the latest in her series of paintings of historical buildings throughout Tuolumne County. Now in her 80’s her paintings have documented nearly 100 years of history in the county. As a lifelong resident of Pinecrest, Leslie’s Family Lodge painting is the final painting to complete her work of the buildings at Dodge Ridge. She has also painted all of the buildings at the Pinecrest Lake including the original rope tow used before Dodge Ridge opened. As a co-founder of the Pinecrest Fine Arts Gallery in Pinecrest, Leslie has committed to showcasing local artists work and promoting art in the community. Dodge Ridge has always been special for Leslie and her family. Her grandparents bought one of the original lots in Pinecrest and Dodge Ridge has been her playground ever since. As one of the Dodge Ridge pioneers Frank Helm issued Leslie a lifetime season pass. The Family Lodge will proudly display Leslie’s latest work throughout the winter season.
The community celebration will be held November 29, 2008 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. The program will begin at 5:15pm with introductions and reflections. A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception follows with live music.
